Although this is not a jet, it does deserve recognition: The first Douglas DC-3 made its maiden flight on 17 December 1935 from Clover Field airport in Santa Monica, California. The last one was built in 1946. The Douglas DC-3 (and other variants such as the C-47 and R4D) was one of the most famous, most durable and probably most beloved aircraft in the history of aviation. Douglas built 10,655 of them, for service in every part of the world. After more than 60 years, about 400 still remain in commercial service. After World War II, General Dwight Eisenhower listed the Douglas C-47 as one of the four pieces of military equipment most vital to the Allied victory. (Photo by Jose)
